An example of a short cover letter
The brief here is a coordinator vacancy and two years handling client appointments, with no management experience. The draft connects those tasks to the role without adding qualifications or performance figures.
Hello, I'm applying for the coordinator role. For two years I worked as a studio administrator, handling client bookings and agreeing schedule changes. The organisational and communication tasks in your vacancy interest me. I'd be glad to discuss how my experience could help the team. My resume is attached.
This example only fits the stated brief. Keep the final sentence if a resume really is attached, and describe your interest in the work honestly.
What to include in a cover letter
If the message is too long for the application field, ask Bonnie to remove repetition and keep the main reason for applying. A short message does not need to become a separate essay.
- Greet the reader and identify the role so the purpose of the message is clear.
- Choose a relevant task, skill or project and explain its connection to the job.
- Say what interests you about the actual work rather than relying on stock praise for the company.
- Close politely and check the employer's application instructions, including any question, portfolio request or subject line.
How to revise an awkward draft
| Problem | A useful revision |
|---|---|
| It repeats the whole resume | Keep one relevant example and explain its connection to the vacancy. |
| It sounds excessively formal | Remove ceremonial phrases while keeping a respectful tone. |
| You lack some requested experience | State your actual level and use a real related task as evidence. |
| It is for a different employer | Check the role, company name, requirements and chosen example again. |
Do not add tools, responsibilities or results simply to sound more persuasive. If facts are missing, clarify them before rewriting.
